SMU Human Rights Program

The centerpiece commitment of Mission Without Borders is its founding support for a human rights education program at Southern Methodist University. This initiative engages faculty from disciplines across the university to acknowledge and teach human rights issues from the perspective of those disciplines. The program enables students to learn together through campus activities and through local and global interactions.

The SMU Human Rights Program is one of only seven institutions in the United States to offer an undergraduate degree in human rights. Each year, it also facilitates many community education events, social change actions, and worldwide travel opportunities.

The program is creating leaders for human rights among its students and faculty. Likewise, the university itself is emerging as a human rights leader in the field of higher education. SMU’s Human Rights Program is used by many other institutions as a model for education and action.
